The Passion of Solo Parenting

I was chatting with a girlfriend this week about independence and not waiting for anyone to give you permission to do what you are wanting to do.

When I became a solo parent I knew that I didn’t want to give up my passion for the outdoors and sharing that passion with my two boys. I knew that I needed to figure out a way to do that on my own with my boys. I didn’t want to wait for a partner or rely on a partner to do what I love.

I bought a campervan last year and it’s been such a blessing to have for ease and efficiency. I’m proud of myself for figuring out how I could still pursue my passion with my two boys while not burning myself out in the meantime. I’m proud of myself for figuring out how I can pursue my passion independently without waiting for a partner or relying on a partner. It hasn’t always been easy and we’ve all had to learn a bit of patience with each other as we figure it out.

My next goal is to explore the backcountry and winter camping with my boys. But, I knew that we needed to start with baby steps. We needed to start with our campervan Eddy, do some van camping and still process the grief that surfaces from our family separating and learn how to function as a family of three.

Yesterday I bought a four season, three person tent and I’m freaking excited!

We can do things in baby steps. We don’t have to take these massive steps right away and jump off the deep end. In my experience, that leads to fear taking over and resulting in paralysis.

We don’t need to wait for others to pursue our passions. Life is way too short to let fear paralyze us.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to do but were a bit scared to do it on your own? What baby step can you take today, tomorrow, in the next month to move towards that goal?

What are you proud of yourself for?
