Guided Outdoor Sauna Experiences

We recommend that you enjoy the sauna using the Nordic Cycle of:

Hot. Cold. Rest. Repeat.

wood burning sauna

HOT

Heat up in our wood-fired barrel sauna that feels like a hug when you’re inside.

The heat increases your heart rate, dilates your blood vessels and increases the blood flow to your skin.

The heat and humidity will assist with relaxing your body and mind as you unwind and experience these benefits:

Immerse yourself for 10-20 minutes at a time!

cold plunge

COLD

Cool down by rinsing, plunging or rolling in the snow!

Allow yourself to fully immerse in the Cold cycle and notice the thoughts that roll around in your mind as you contemplate cooling yourself down by either rinsing with our outdoor shower, plunging in the nearby lake or rolling in the snow!

Cold will stimulate your white blood cells and assists with fighting off illness. Also, your lymphatic system will contract, forcing fluids through your lymph nodes to detoxify and strengthen your immune system.

The transition from hot to cold has many science-based health benefits, including:

  • increased hormone levels

  • flushing the lymphatic system

  • rebalancing the autonomic nervous system

  • lower blood sugar

  • improves adrenal function

  • boosts the immune system

  • increased pain tolerance

  • reduces inflammation

  • lowers body fat

The cold rinse or plunge is optional, however, we encourage you to push your limits and increase your self awareness!

REST

Take the time to slow down and rest!

Sink into deep relaxation, connect with your breathe, engage in conversation with others and enjoy a snack and lemon water or tea.

The benefits of the rest phase includes:

  • Increased self-awareness

  • Connecting more deeply with yourself

  • Focusing on your breath and embodiment

REPEAT

Repeat this process three or more times to maximize the health benefits and cleanse the mind and the body.

  • Sauna is a small room covered with wood with the most common temperature of 70 to 100 degrees Celsius (158 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit). The optimal humidity in the sauna is about 10 percent, and it is increased by pouring water on hot stones.

Our barrel sauna is heated with a wood stove from the outside. In a barrel-shaped sauna, the heat gets circulated back down along the curved walls instead of pooling near the top. This creates a constant flow of evenly distributed heat throughout the sauna.

The sauna may be used as a dry sauna or a wet sauna by pouring water on the rocks, increasing the temperature of the sauna.

  • When you arrive for one of our outdoor guided sauna experience, we provide you with an overview of the entire experience, providing you with recommendations on the best way to sauna bathe and to maximize your sauna experience!

We provide everything you will need to create a comfortable, relaxing experience including:

    • Chairs for relaxing in after your sauna experience

    • Luxury outdoor robes and blankets to keep you cozy warm when you are outside of the sauna

    • Water, tea and cups to keep you hydrated

    • An outdoor shower (or access to snow to roll in) to cool you off in between sauna sessions

    • Headlamps to venture off on a cold plunge (available in the spring, summer and fall)

Here’s what to expect during a sauna experience:

Our sauna experiences are 3 hours in length. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by Kyla and offered a tea or lemon water and one of our luxury outdoor robes so you can stay warm and cozy!

Next, you’ll find a chair and get comfortable as everyone arrives. After everyone has arrived, up to 12 people, Kyla will walk you through the sauna experience and how to benefit the most from the sauna using the Nordic Cycle of HOT-COLD-REST-REPEAT.

You’ll start by getting ready to get HOT in the sauna. You’ll either come already wearing your sauna gear or change in our 3-foot change room in the sauna. We recommend either wearing your bathing suit or light weight clothing. Next, you’ll choose one of our sauna hats to wear, this will allow you stay in the sauna longer, so you don’t overheat. Then, you’ll enter the wood-burning barrel sauna and enjoy the coziness and the feeling of a hug in nature.

Heating up the body increases blood flow throughout your body and has many healing qualities. You’ll know when to get out by listening to your core. When you leave, you’ll then decide whether you’d like to engage in the COLD part of the cycle.

You’ll have the option of rinsing off with our outdoor shower, plunging in the lake or rolling in the snow. After you feel refreshed, you’ll REST, either outside in our inviting space or inside if it’s a bit chilly. We have snack boxes, lemon water and tea for you to replenish. You’ll have access to journaling exercises and oracle cards if you’d like to self-reflect or enjoy the fresh, quiet nature air to relax deeper.

Once you start to feel cool again, you’ll hop back in the sauna and REPEAT the cycle again, and again, and again. We recommend repeating this cycle as many times as you like during the experience.

If you join one of our sauna experiences that’s combined with a fun activity like hiking, dancing, yoga or learning about numbers, you’ll engage in this activity either before your sauna or in between cycles.

  • Prior to arriving for your guided outdoor sauna experience, we recommend that you shower first and remove any jewelry and make-up.

When you enter the sauna, try to do so as quickly as possible in order to prevent any heat from escaping.

Bring a towel in the sauna with you to sit on, this will prevent your skin from sticking to the bench and soak up any sweat to allow you to stay drier.

  • Before arriving to your outdoor guided sauna experience, we recommend that you shower first.

We recommend that you wear light breathable clothing or a bathing suit in the sauna.

Light breathable clothing will prevent you from overheating in the sauna. Be sure that the clothing is breathable and won’t stick to your skin and cause irritation if you begin to sweat.

Swimsuits are a great option if you plan on going swimming or taking a shower after your sauna session.

Be sure to bring sandals that you are able to wear in the sauna but have not worn outside.

  • The only items that you are needing to bring are:

    • Towels (we recommend two in case one gets extremely wet, that way you have an extra that stays somewhat dry!)

    • Extra change of clothes for after your sauna session

  • Immersive Wellness: Our outdoor saunas are designed to create an immersive wellness experience, where the soothing heat and natural surroundings work in harmony to relax muscles, clear the mind, and promote a sense of profound well-being.

Expert Guidance: Our experienced guides are dedicated to ensuring your sauna session is both safe and deeply therapeutic. They will provide insights on maximizing the benefits of the sauna, from optimal duration to alternating between hot and cold.

Connection with Nature: Surrounded by the sights and sounds of the outdoors, our saunas provide an opportunity to connect with nature in a unique and intimate way. The experience is enhanced by the presence of towering trees, crisp fresh air, and the gentle whispers of the wind.

Optional Add-Ons: Elevate your experience with optional add-ons such as rejuvenating breathwork sessions, immersive hike or snowshoe and grazing boxes by The Prairie Grazer
